There's been a decent amount of recruiting news this week, so I thought I would put together a wrap up piece.
The biggest news is concerning #1 QB prospect Jake Heaps, who has made a decision on his future. Heaps committed to the BYU Cougars and will announce the decision on today. Heaps is a member of the LDS, which is always a pipeline for BYU. Heaps chose the Cougars of the Irish, who were always a bit of a long shot, along with Washington, LSU, Tennessee, and Cal. No word on whether Heaps will take a year for a mission or not, and I'm not sure he will ever actually suit up for the Cougars. The whole situation is comprable to that of Ben Olson, a former #1 QB out of high school who chose BYU, took his mission, and then ended up at UCLA.
Nick Montana, Joe's boy, will make his last unofficial visit this weekend, taking a trip to the University of Washington. Montana has been all over the country, visiting Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama amongst others. He also has checked out the USC program, living close to LA. Montana will then decide on making a commitment or scheduling official visits.Nick went on to say that he isn't close to making a decision yet, which cancels out rumors that he was close to choosing the Irish.
"I don't think I'll commit anywhere right away," Montana said. "After my trip, I'm going to want to sit down with my family and try and figure out where the best place is and I don't want to make any emotional decisions. When you commit on a visit, it's kind of an emotional thing and I want to stay away from that. Right now, I'm just looking forward to seeing what the school has to offer."I think the decision will come down to the Irish and the Trojans, though Montana seems to have legitimate interest in the Huskies.
Charlie Weis extended an official offer this past week to California recruit Hayes Pullard. The Irish are considering Pullard at linebacker and fullback. He's 6'2", 22o pounds, and runs a 4.5 40. Pullard has offers from USC, Stanford, UCLA, both Arizona schools, both Washington schools, and Nebraska. He is considered a USC lean, but has solid interest in the Irish.
Ishmael Thomas a 6'4", 200 pound linebacker from Detroit, will reportedly camp at Notre Dame. He has yet to receive an official offer, but has interest in the Irish, along with Michigan, Michigan State, and Northwestern. Thomas also has offers from Iowa, Indiana, Colorado, and Arkansas.
Thomas is a bit of a fringe prospect, rating as a three-star on Rivals. A lot of his future will be determined by his senior season. A good year could produce a recruiting battle between the Irish and the two Michigan schools.
